Skincare line founded in Edmonton to be included in Grammy gift bags

Skin care products formulated by two Edmonton doctors are due to appear in gift bags for performers and presenters at the 65th Grammy Awards.

On Sunday, music industry stars will find swag bags with ecoMD products created by dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Jaggi Rao and his partner Dr. Namita Rao, brand director Raheela Gangji told Postmedia.

“We’re thrilled that they’re going to be able to experience our range of products,” Gangji said of the gift bag recipients. “We are excited to hopefully put Edmonton on the map for awesomeness in the personal care field.”

The highlighted products are part of a “four-day skin cycling routine” comprising a botanical exfoliant, vegan retinol serum and face balm, the ecoMD website states.

When the creators’ teenage daughter expressed an interest in shopping for commercial cosmetics, the Raos were inspired to create a line of “high efficacy” products that didn’t compromise with harmful ingredients, Gangji said, adding that the doctors started using the product in their treatment rooms and selling it to patients at their clinics, Rao Dermatology and ActivMD Derm Spa, both on 109 Street and 76 Avenue.

“Dr. Namita Rao actually reached out to the company that does the official gifting for the Grammy Awards,” Gangji said, “and they responded.”

Distinctive Assets, an entertainment marketing company based in Los Angeles, has partnered with The Recording Academy to produce the gift bags.

In an email statement, Distinctive Assets founder Lash Fary said that while he personally avoids skincare items with retinol — a form of vitamin A — because they’re harsh for his skin type, he found a “go-to product” in ecoMD’s vegan retinol.

“I am honoured to be able to gift it to this year’s Grammy presenters and performers,” he said. “I feel certain ecoMD will have some new devotees very soon — ones who also happen to be really talented musically.”

For a product line that launched in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gangji said “this exposure is unreal for our company.”

“This doesn’t happen this early in the game for most,” she said.
